Coronavirus Live Updates: COVID-19 Cases In India Cross 49,000-Mark, 126 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

Covid-19 India Updates: India has embarked on a “massive” operation calling up passenger jets and naval ships to bring back some of the hundreds of thousands of its nationals stuck abroad.

New Delhi: The coronavirus cases in India inched towards the 50,000-mark as the country registered 49,391 cases, including 1,694, according to the latest figures from the Union Health Ministry. In the last 24 hours, 2,958 new cases and 126 deaths were reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of a taskforce on the coronavirus vaccine development, drug discovery, diagnosis and testing and reviewed India”s efforts in the fight against COVID-19. India has also embarked on a “massive” operation calling up passenger jets and naval ships to bring back some of the hundreds of thousands of its nationals stuck abroad. Evacuees will have to pay for their passage and spend 14 days in quarantine on arrival.

Meanwhile, Telangana has said it will continue the lockdown in the state to contain the coronavirus outbreak till May 29 — ten days after it is scheduled to end in the rest of the country.

“People want lockdown extended. I have informed the Prime Minister about our decision,” said Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao after a 7- hour cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening.

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 2,54,532 people since the outbreak first emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by news agency AFP today. More than 3,629,160 cases were registered in 195 countries and territories.
