Dr. Uday Sankar Ray was born in 1949. He did his Graduation, Masters and PhD in Physiology from the University of Calcutta. He was conferred D.Sc. (Honoris Causa,Yoga) by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhan Samsthan (S-VYASA), a Deemed University, Bangalore for his contributions in the form of physiological research in the field of yoga.
Dr.Ray was Senior Scientist & Additional Director at Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), DRDO, Min of Defence, Delhi. He also served as Program Director of the Centre for Advanced research &Training in Yoga, a joint venture of MDNIY, AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and DIPAS. He served as Full Professor, guest faculty and member of Board of studies in many Universities and guided research students.
He was member of the Project evaluation committee, Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, Dept of AYUSH, Min of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India. He is also reviewer of scientific papers of the National and International journals like Indian Journal of Medical Research, Medicine and science in sports and exercise, ACSM; Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine,USA. ;Yoga Mimansa, KaivalyadhamaLonavala; Internationl Journal of Yoga; Evidence Based Complimentary Medicine, Journal of Sports and nutrition
His research encompassed areas of Exercise Physiology, Neurophysiology, high altitude, cold, Yoga, Ergonomics, occupational health and Sports Science. He participated extensively in field trials at high altitude, the Arctic at North Pole .
A very rare combination of experience in different fields enriched his research related to Yoga and its applications particularly in performance improvement by yoga in environmentally stressful conditions. He is the leading scientist to show improvement in aerobic capacity by yoga with scientific reasons. Formulation of Yoga packages for the army at high altitude, Navy and air force was important in this regard.. In recent times he has helped in the implementation of 5 minutes yoga protocol made by MDNIY, New Delhi. He was Principal Investigator of a number of projects of Ministry of Defence and CCRYN, New Delhi.. Being a speaker in many National and International Conferences and Symposium he shared new findings, this includes a special symposium by the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi on the occasion of the 50 Years of the discovery of ‘J’ receptor by Prof A.S. Paintal.
Dr Ray has more than 140 research publications. He and his team published many papers which may have significant impact on human health and performance. In recognition to his contributions he got several awards like SR Moitra oration award by the Physiological Society of India; Scientist of the Year award, National Technology day and National Science Day award by DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Govt of India.
