Dr. Deepti Majumdar

Dr. Deepti Majumdar, Scientist-‘F’ has been carrying out research in the field of Military Ergonomics, Human Physiology and Biomechanics at Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS) under Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), M/o Defence, Government of India since last 33 years. She holds a Ph. D. degree in Human Physiology from Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, West Bengal, India. Her research experience in the area of core Military Ergonomic includes Human-machine Interface (HMI) issues and Biomechanics of Human Gait for Indian soldiers and application of Pro-active Ergonomics in Military Workstation and Arms design. She was instrumental in establishing first completely functional Integrated Gait Analysis Laboratory in DRDO with capabilities of simultaneously measuring Kinematics, Kinetics and Electromyography during various activities involving any form of movement with and without load in space. She has further honed her research acumen in Applied research capabilities in the fields of gait analysis, segmental biomechanics, Occupational Health and evaluation of musculoskeletal disorder risks applying ergonomics evaluation and interventions as per operations involved.
Cognitive Ergonomics: She has carried out extensive assessment of different Display characteristics of Military workstations and Weapon Systems for optimization of Display attributes for enhanced compatibility and performance, reduced cognitive stress and fatigue.
Macro Ergonomic evaluation: assessing physical, postural, physiological, biomechanical and cognitive stresses using scientific instruments, subjective assessments, performance and response measurements, modeling and simulations in virtual reality environment. These lead to ergonomics interventions for improved HMI issues.
Proactive Design evaluation: Ergonomic Analysis of digital workstations/products using digital human models for design improvements so that resulting design of products, tasks and work methods conform to human characteristics and maximizes safety, efficiency and well-being.
As Team Leader she has completed several important Defence projects pertaining enhancing soldiers’ performance by improving living conditions and occupational health of soldiers under adverse environment and terrain conditions.
She has 8 Design and Product patents to her credit. Her publications include 23 Full papers in peer reviewed journals like Ergonomics, International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, etc. and 6 Book Chapters till date. She has been recognized as Reviewer for several peer reviewed journals, including International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, International Journal of Gait & Posture, International Journal of Safety and Health at Workplace. The awards given to her so far include “International Best Researcher Awards in Ergonomics” from The International Society for Scientific Network Awards during ISSN International Science & Technology Awards Congress (IISTAC-2023) held at Grandeur Hall, Hotel Breeze Residency, Trichy (Tiruchirappalli),Tamil Nadu, India on 28 October 2023; National Science Day Oration Award 2020 of Defence R&D Organization, M/o Defence, GOI at DRDO Bhawan, Delhi; Technology Group Awards 2013, 2009 and 2003 from DRDO, M/o Defence, GOI. Malhotra Award for Best Paper of DIPAS 2010; Unibol Scholarship from University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy in June 2006

Future Research Plan: She is striving towards establishing (for first time in India) Optimized Synthetic Training Environment for enhancing resilience in Indian Soldiers.
