Hisham Ahmed Arab is a medical graduate from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, who qualified as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist from the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1987.
He is a Senior Consultant and Director of the Women and Fetal Health Program at Dr Hisham Arab Center, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Hisham Arab is a highly accomplished Obstetrician Gynecologist with extensive experience in Maternal Fetal Medicine, Assisted Reproduction, and Minimal Invasive Gynecology. He has significantly contributed to the field through his research, teaching activities, and involvement in various societies and organizations worldwide.
Since the turn of the millennium, he strode into the international arena by presenting more than 300 different topics in 39 countries to this day. He organized more than 100 courses and conferences nationally and internationally.
Hisham Arab published numerous research papers in various medical journals, covering many topics in several disciplines:
Maternal-Fetal Medicine: He covered in his publications subjects like miscarriage and early pregnancy and medical complications in pregnancy such as anemia, gestational diabetes, cardiac disease, renal failure/transplant, and others. Prenatal diagnosis, fetal screening, ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology, fetal anomalies, perinatal outcomes, and vaccination. Prematurity, placenta accreta spectrum, thrombo-prophylaxis, and labor and delivery variations.
Gynecology and Infertility: In this field, he covered hormonal contraception and hormone replacement therapy, abnormal uterine bleeding, vulvodynia and pelvic pain, fertility and assisted reproductive technology, endometriosis, all uterine disorders, PCOS, minimally invasive surgery, vaginal surgery, and intimate feminine hygiene. Female urinary incontinence, cervical screening, patient education, and raising awareness.
His way of burning light during the COVID-19 pandemic was to write about the effect of the disease on the mother and fetus and he published 4 papers on that effect during the year 2021, one of which was a systematic review.
Minimal Invasive Gynecology: His expertise started with his membership with the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy (AAGL) in 1983 (40 years ago) when he had his basic training in MIS followed by advanced training in Belgium in the year 1996 and the USA in the year 2000. Dr Hisham Arab Performed the 1st laparoscopic Hysterectomy in Saudi Arabia in July 2001. He organized many hands-on laparoscopy and hysteroscopy training courses across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia till he established the Saudi Group of Gynecologic Laparoscopists in 2013.
Hisham Arab’s efforts to train doctors in this field extended to many countries around the world through his voluntary work with the International Society of Gynecologic Endoscopy (ISGE) from 2013 till today
At a national level, he was the driving force behind the generation and publication of 4 Saudi Guidelines covering Thrombosis, Miscarriage, Iron Deficiency Anemia, and Intimate Hygiene; and currently working on two more at the request of the Ministry of Health.
He has been an editor of the Donald School Journal of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (DSJUOG) since 2014. Moreover, he has been a reviewer for many open-access medical journals like The Trocar, EC Gynecology, and others.
Awards and distinctions: Hisham Arab has received several awards and distinctions throughout his career, including the Silver Medal at the 6th Saudi Annual Medical Conference for his paper on the radiological assessment of the Saudi Female pelvis in 1980 (The first research in his career).
He also received the Silver Prize Award at the 1st International Congress of Perinatal Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, for his research on the reproductive risk of consecutive abortions in 1991.
More recently, In 2021, he was awarded the Best Presentation at the RCOG World Congress for his paper on the role of PGS in eliminating sickling & Thalassemia.
Hisham Arab Prize: His voluntary involvement in Gynecologic Endoscopy training through the ISGE inspired him to establish a Prize in his name that was awarded annually for the best Young Minimally Invasive Surgeon since 2016 in several countries including Indonesia, Jamaica, Cameron, South Africa, Australia, and Malaysia.
