I was born in the heart of Nadia district, in the modest city of Ranaghat, a place far from the pages of picturesque tales, but rather etched in the struggles of poverty. From the outset, life threw a curveball at me – Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV), or clubfoot. Yet, adversity became the silent companion of my journey, shaping the narrative of tenacity and humility.
My family, hailing from a lineage of farmers, navigated the harsh realities of rural life until fate presented an opportunity. My father secured employment at the Ishapore Rifle Factory, marking a shift that held the promise of a different life. Little did we know that this transition would lead to a nomadic existence, hopping from one rented apartment to another for the next 23 years.
The backdrop of Nadia, not in its scenic splendor but in its stark poverty, laid the foundation for a resilient character. Amidst the struggles, I completed my secondary and higher secondary education at the Modern English Academy in Barrackpore, a testament to the unwavering support of my family and the belief in the power of education to alter destinies.
A defining chapter awaited as I secured a seat in one of the world’s oldest medical colleges, now known as Medical College, Kolkata. The journey through medical school was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was about assuming leadership roles. Recruited as a Local Exchange Officer and Local Officer of Research Exchange in the Medical Students’ Association of India (MSAI), the Indian wing of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), I embraced the responsibility of shaping the future of medical education.
The resilience ingrained in me faced a stern test during the tumultuous times of the Covid-19 pandemic. The first and second waves hit during my second year of MBBS. Undeterred, I continued attending classes, engaging in practicals, and facing exams, showcasing a commitment to the pursuit of knowledge in the face of unprecedented challenges.
Having completed MBBS with a first division, I now find myself in the midst of a one-year rotational internship, gaining hands-on experience across diverse medical fields. Looking ahead, my aspirations extend beyond personal achievements; I aim to contribute to the well-being of communities. The dream is to pursue General Practice or Emergency Medicine training in the NHS, UK, a testament to the enduring spirit that rose from the humble roots of Nadia district to the corridors of medical excellence.
